Steve -- I just found this particular website. I had the exact same experience you did. After hearing the 365 "fear not" statement so many times, I had the same brilliant idea, to catalogue them and make a book or a calendar, and, of course, after much searching, I could not find anywhere near 365. After hearing it yet again recently, I did a search today on the Internet with the words "fear not" and "365". It was amazing how many sites quoted this as truth, and as evidence of God's remarkable loving nature and creativity (but, of course, with no evidence for the claim attached). Only when I added the words "not true" to my search did I come upon your column. Thanks for speaking the truth.

Hey you could still chronicle the actual mentions of Fear Not even if there aren't 365

Great editorial. For me, same idea same result. The claim of 365 "fear nots" came up again in the movie "Facing the Giants". The coach from Georgia comes in to counsel with his old friend before the big game and references this line. This was actually part of their script. Not to diminish anything from the scope of the movie -- the message was still loud and clear. At the same time, this claim will circulate and be quoted as true because it was a line in a movie.

I agree with the comment above from "anonymous". Why not catalog the references with messages from God not to fear? Develop a devotional or series of messages on living courageously and confidently in Christ with a healthy fear of God himself yet free of the fleshly fear rooted in the deception of the enemy...

Blessings to you, friend.

Steve...thanks for this column. I was just going online to search this out. I thought, "If this is true then surely someone has listed these verses and I won't have to do it myself." I am glad to have come upon your column because it saved me a lot of time! I can't believe this "fact" has gone one for so long as truth without having been fully searched out.

I am doing a Lenten study of TRUSTING God and not fearing, worrying or having anxiety. So, I think there are enough for at least that. :)

Thanks again and God Bless!

<strong>Amanda</strong>, thanks for stopping by and for leaving this comment. This article continues to be one of the more popular Google searches that I receive based on this one element of the post (the 365 fear nots). Apparently, it's not only a commonly taught "fact", but many people are trying to verify it on their own. That's refreshing to see!

I know the last tag on here is several months old. I am looking up 'fear not' for a children/youth lesson and will gladly be telling them that fear is in the Bible, via - Crosswalk, KJV 385 times and NKJV 354 times. None of them seem to be holding fear in a positive light so I'll hold with the old '365 fear nots' in the Bible.

Debbie,

Thanks for your comment. There's nothing wrong with the point you're trying to make regarding fear and how it's dealt with in the Bible.

As I mentioned in this post, there is certainly reason to "fear not".

The issue I was trying to address, however, is the inaccuracy of the statement that the Bible says "fear not" 365 times. Why perpetuate that statement if it's not true? It just serves to cause people to question our credibility.

The statement that is oft-repeated is not "The Bible talks about fear in a negative context over 365 times." It is, "The Bible says 'Fear not' 365 times, one for each day of the year."

That's just simply false.

Anyway, I appreciate the point you're trying to make. I just think it misses the point that <strong>I</strong> was trying to make ;)

Steve,

I just heard this the other day in "Facing the Giants". I was intrigued by this factoid, so I looked it up with QuickVerse. I could only find around 100, no matter what combination I tried. I checked online, and the first hit was here:

The exact phrase ‘fear not’ may not be in the Bible 365 times. But an online search with Strong’s Concordance gave 385 fears… That more than covers whether or not there are 365 fear nots and then some.
*************************

Unfortunately, this is even worse that the problem you're talking about. This isn't simply taking someone's word as fact; this is a refusal to reject the claim even when it's be proven false.

God help us. Thanks for your post, Steve.

As I write I am at about 114 using PC Study Bible. I have heard this several times before and have myself said "I have heard there are 365 fear nots". While people misquoting this as fact doesn't overly concern me, it does raise concerns about deeper theological misquotes and misconcpetions that are repeated as truths. Our concern should not be "how it makes us look" but rather the effect we have on drawing people closer to or pushing people further from Jesus. But then again, with 365 fear nots in the bible we shouldn't fear this either :)
